Yerba mate is an infusion of holly leaves from Paraguay. It is popular in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and other South American countries, where it is drunk like tea or coffee. The drink is a source of valuable vitamins (A, B1, B2, PP, C, H), minerals (iron, magnesium, sodium, potassium, silicon, sulfur), as well as other ingredients that have a beneficial effect on health. Yerba mate also has slimming properties: it improves digestion, accelerates metabolism, and regulates the amount of fat absorbed by the body.

Slimming properties Yerba mate

Yerba mate supports the loss of unnecessary kilograms, so – in addition to diet and exercise – it should be included in a comprehensive weight loss plan. The infusion of gourd inhibits the activity of a digestive enzyme (pancreatic lipase).

As a result of this process, fats are not digested in the small intestine but are excreted by the body. As a result, the caloric content of the fatty meal is reduced. It is recommended to eat yerba mate up to 30 minutes after eating fatty food.

Other slimming properties of yerba mate are:

  • aids in digestion,
  • accelerating the metabolism,
  • cleanse the body of toxins (mild diuretic effect),
  • feeling of satiety.

Some blends are also supplemented with other slimming ingredients, such as green tea, which speeds up the metabolism.

Yerba mate has slimming properties, but remember that drinking the infusion alone will not result in weight loss. It can only be a component of a balanced diet, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle.

Yerba mate also has other health properties:

  • improves the work of the heart,
  • prevents atherosclerosis (lowers LDL cholesterol and increases HDL fraction),
  • prevents anemia,
  • strengthens bones and teeth,
  • has antioxidant properties (eliminates free radicals),
  • improves the body’s immunity,
  • supports memory and concentration,
  • has anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and anti-parasitic properties.

Why is yerba mate stimulating?

Yerba mate can be used as an alternative to coffee because of its stimulating effect. Served both hot and cold, it stimulates the nervous system, eliminates signs of fatigue, and improves concentration. It is recommended during periods of intense mental work, for example when studying before exams.

Yerba mate is stimulating because of the content of compounds derived from caffeine. They work in the long term so that the effect lasts longer than after coffee.

The content of magnesium and potassium, as well as vitamin B, which has a positive effect on the work of the nervous system, helps to eliminate fatigue and reduce the effects of stress, is not without importance.

Yerba mate – contraindications

Yerba mate is not recommended for children, pregnant and breastfeeding women and people who consume large amounts of coffee and energy drinks.

In case of high blood pressure and heart disease, it is worthwhile to consult a doctor.

Yerba mate – side effects

Excessive consumption of yerba mate – like coffee – can cause undesirable side effects such as

  • over-arousal,
  • palpitations,
  • dizziness,
  • laxative effect.

How to drink yerba mate?

In South America, yerba mate is drunk in special dishes called bombillas. They can be made of gourds, but not necessarily. The mixture is poured with boiling water (even several times), then drunk through a metal straw with a strainer, which prevents the coffee grounds from penetrating.

How to prepare yerba mate step by step:

  1. Pour ¼ to ¾ of the amount into a container, depending on the desired intensity of the infusion.
  2. Cover the hole with your hand and shake it a few times.
  3. Place the straw in the dish.
  4. Pour water at a temperature of 65 to 80 degrees Celsius so that it covers the leaves.
  5. When the dry material is soaked, add as much water as possible.
