What is Laughter Yoga?

The injection of joy provided by laughter therapy enlivens, stimulates action, and gives the energy to achieve new goals. Laughter yoga brings to the surface the desires repressed in us by a careful upbringing, filled with prohibitions and dictates. When we laugh, we breathe three times as much air, thanks to which we are better oxygenated. In a happy state, our body also produces endorphins that improve our well-being. Laughter stimulates the immune system, inhibiting the secretion of the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol. The rhythmic contractions of the abdominal muscles also accelerate digestion. Laughter, therefore, replaces exercise to a certain extent.

Created in India in 1995

The influence of laughter on human health and mental state was studied in the mid-1990s by an Indian physician, Madan Kataria. He organized the first laughter yoga clubs in the world. Their members still meet in parks to laugh together and do breathing exercises. The sight of people pretending to be flocks of birds, imitating animal noises, and laughing at each other is not surprising. It’s just a good way to start the day before work, where the current pace is almost always stressful and tense. Americans have also decided to use the salutary effects of laughter therapy. It turned out that employees of companies that introduced elements of humor at work are less stressed, bolder in decision making, and more connected to the workplace. Their self-confidence grows.

Psychotherapy and positive thinking training in one

Contemporary psychotherapy aims at empowering people rather than at an in-depth analysis of problems. This empowerment can take place, for example, by relieving mental tensions that are sometimes difficult to bear. In encounters with people seeking psychological help, one element of therapy is to find the fun in a seemingly serious problem.

States of tension should be interrupted as soon as possible. If we bury our negative emotions, we ourselves create a spiral of stress. The key question here seems to be whether it is external circumstances or perhaps we ourselves who are causing this unbearable state. If we find fault in ourselves, we should work on it. Instead of crying over spilled milk, you should look into the future and try to approach it positively. So for starters, stand in front of the mirror and smile!

Work out at home

  • Find at least a few minutes each day to relax.
  • Don’t accumulate toxic emotions. Try to relieve them with laughter, even through tears.
  • Remember that sad music and gloomy movies add to your bad mood.
  • When you’re feeling down, try smiling in spite of yourself.
  • A friend who can make you laugh is a great treasure – try to return the favor.
  • Seek out the company of happy, cheerful people.
  • Find funny websites on the Internet and visit them whenever you have the chance.
  • Collect cartoon jokes, comedies, memorize jokes and pass them on as often as possible.
  • Occasionally reminisce about childhood games that brought you special joy.
